Arizona Water Treatment Operator Certification: Program Overview & Desert Water Sources
Certification Structure
Arizona's Water Treatment operator certification program is administered statewide by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) through its Operator Certification Program. Operators progress through four grade levels:
- Grade 1 — entry level, no prior experience required beyond a high school diploma or GED
- Grade 2
- Grade 3
- Grade 4 — highest level, required for the largest and most complex treatment facilities
Each exam consists of 100 scored multiple-choice questions, with a 3-hour time limit, and a passing score of 70 points.
