Basic Geometry: Process Control Basics

A clearwell's surface area and its volume are two completely different numbers used for two completely different calculations — confuse them and you'll misjudge everything from detention time to disinfectant contact time. The Trapezoid: Channel Cross-Sections
Open channels — flumes, aeration channels, irrigation-style conveyance — are frequently trapezoidal in cross-section: a wider top, narrower bottom, sloped sides (for structural stability and to prevent bank erosion).

where b1b_1 and b2b_2 are the two parallel sides (top width and bottom width) and hh is the height (depth) between them.
