Advanced Practice for California T3-T5 Water Treatment Operators
T1 and T2 certify operators for straightforward systems: pass an exam, and at T2, complete one 36-hour training course. T3 through T5 are a different tier entirely — they certify the operators responsible for California's largest and most complex treatment plants, including conventional surface water plants fed by the State Water Project and Colorado River, and the state's growing roster of advanced-treatment and desalination facilities.
The experience ladder
Unlike T1/T2, grades T3-T5 require real operating time under a certified operator at the grade below, plus escalating training:
  • T3: 1 year as a certified T2 operator at a T2 facility or higher, plus 1 additional year as a certified treatment operator (2 years total), plus two 36-hour training courses (at least one in drinking water treatment fundamentals
