Connecticut Distribution Operator Certification: Program Overview
Certification Structure
Connecticut DPH certifies water distribution operators through a Small Water System Operator credential plus three numbered classes, Class I through Class III. Unlike Connecticut's treatment classes (which scale with treatment process complexity), distribution classes scale primarily with the population served / system size.
- Small Water System Operator: the entry credential for the smallest systems. A candidate qualifies with either 6 months of relevant experience or 20 hours of approved training.
- Class I - III: increasing scope as the population served grows.
Renewal and Continuing Education
Certifications renew on a 3-year cycle. Required continuing education hours scale by class: 10 hours for Class I, 20 for Class II, 30 for Class III per 3-year period.
