A filter isn't a set-it-and-forget-it piece of equipment — it moves through a predictable cycle every single run, and knowing exactly where a filter sits in that cycle, and why, is what separates routine process control from just watching gauges. This guide builds on the fundamentals of media and backwashing and moves into the numbers and procedures a Class C operator is expected to actively manage: headloss, backwash execution, filter-to-waste, and the everyday troubleshooting calls that come with running filters on a real schedule.
The Filter Run Cycle
Every filter run follows the same basic arc:
  1. Startup — the filter returns to service after backwash, typically with filter-to-waste in effect (see below) while the bed "ripens."
  2. Normal operation — the filter runs at its design (or controlled) rate, steadily accumulating solids in the media and producing filtered water
