Indiana Water Treatment Operator Certification: WT1-WT5 Fundamentals
Certification Structure
Indiana's drinking water operator certification, administered by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) under 327 IAC 8, uses a five-tier system:
- WT1: Small groundwater systems using simple processes like ion exchange or inline filtration. Entry-level, 1 year of experience required.
- WT2: Slightly more complex systems, 1 year of experience.
- WT3: Requires 2 years of experience (1 year may be substituted by related college coursework).
- WT4: Surface water treatment plants, 2 years of experience.
- WT5: The most complex surface water facilities, 3 years of experience (2 years substitutable by college education).
- WT6 is reserved for emerging treatment technologies and is not yet a standard issued credential.
