Louisiana Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification
Program Structure
Louisiana wastewater treatment operators are certified Class 1 through Class 4, population-graded, by LDH's Bureau of Engineering Services, on the same 2-year/16-CE-hour renewal cycle as the drinking water disciplines.
Discharge Permitting: LPDES
Louisiana wastewater treatment plants discharge under the Louisiana Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (LPDES) — the state's EPA-delegated NPDES program — into an extensive network of bayous, the Mississippi River, and coastal wetlands.
Coastal Land Loss and Nutrient Scrutiny
Louisiana has one of the highest rates of coastal wetland loss in the world, driven by subsidence, sediment starvation behind levees, and saltwater intrusion into marshes. Because the wetlands that many plants discharge into also function as critical flood and storm-surge buffer
