Louisiana Water Distribution Operator Certification
Program Structure
Louisiana's water distribution systems are certified Class 1 through Class 4 by LDH's Bureau of Engineering Services, using the same population-graded framework (Class 1 under 1,000 people served, up to Class 4 above 25,000) and the same 2-year renewal cycle with 16 continuing education hours (staggered A-J even years, K-Z odd years) as Water Treatment and Water Production.
Terrain-Driven Distribution Challenges
Much of south Louisiana sits at or below sea level, on flat, low-lying, high-water-table terrain. This has two major consequences for distribution operators:
- High infiltration/exfiltration and frequent main breaks — soil subsidence in soft alluvial ground stresses buried pipe joints and connections over time.
