Louisiana Water Treatment & Water Production Operator Certification
Program Structure
Louisiana certifies drinking water operators through the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), Bureau of Engineering Services, under a Committee of Certification that writes and validates its own exams — Louisiana does not use the national ABC standardized exam. The state issues two related but distinct credential tracks:
- Water Treatment — operators of facilities that treat surface water or otherwise perform active treatment processes (coagulation, filtration, disinfection, etc.)
- Water Production — a separate LDH credential generally associated with groundwater/well systems
Both tracks run Class 1 through Class 4, graded by the population served: Class 1 covers systems serving under 1,000 people, up through Class 4 for systems serving more than 25,000.
