Michigan Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification (Class D through A, L1/L2, SC)
Certification Structure
Michigan's municipal wastewater treatment plant operators are certified by EGLE's Water Resources Division across a standard Class D (entry) through Class A (highest) ladder, plus two specialized credentials:
- Class L1 / L2 -- for stabilization lagoon systems, a common wastewater treatment approach for smaller Michigan communities.
- Class SC -- a simplified certification for small or straightforward facilities requiring only routine monitoring and operation.
Municipal wastewater certification exams are offered twice a year, typically in May and November. Renewal is on a 3-year cycle with continuing education requirements that scale by class (higher classes require more CECs, including a minimum split between technical and managerial training).
