Certification Structure

Mississippi wastewater treatment operators are certified by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) across four classes, graded by facility complexity and size:

Class I — entry level, simplest facilities
Class II — moderate complexity
Class III — advanced processes
Class IV — the most complex municipal/industrial facilities

Operators generally must pass the Class II exam before sitting for Class III or Class IV — the certification ladder is sequential rather than allowing operators to test directly at an advanced level regardless of experience. Certification requires annual renewal with continuing education.
