One of the Highest Concentrations of Combined Sewer Systems in the Country
New Jersey's sewer collection systems are heavily concentrated in older, densely developed cities in the northern and central parts of the state — Newark, Jersey City, Trenton, Camden — many of which still operate combined sewer systems (CSS) dating to the 19th and early 20th century. NJ has one of the highest concentrations of CSS communities in the country, driving major, ongoing federally-mandated combined sewer overflow (CSO) Long Term Control Plan investments across the affected municipalities.
