A Mixed Surface Water and Groundwater Supply
New Jersey's drinking water supply draws on a mix of Delaware River / Delaware & Raritan Canal surface water (serving much of the densely populated north/central corridor), the Passaic and Raritan Rivers, and significant groundwater use in the south — including the Pinelands/Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer system and the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer, portions of which face saltwater intrusion and historic over-pumping concerns.
