New York Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification
Wastewater treatment plant operators in New York are certified by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) under ECL Article 17 / the SPDES program. The grade ladder runs Grade 1 through Grade 4, with a parallel "A" track (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A) for plants using activated sludge treatment. Grade 1-4 exams run 100 questions over 3 hours; the A-track exams run 110 questions (including pilot questions) over the same window. Certification renews on a 5-year cycle.
