Oregon Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification
DEQ certifies Wastewater Treatment operators on a Grade I through Grade IV ladder plus a Small Wastewater System (SWWS) credential. Certification rules were updated effective January 1, 2025 (OAR 340-049) — operators should be familiar with the current rule text rather than older guidance.
Where Oregon's Wastewater Goes
Oregon wastewater treatment plants discharge primarily to three types of receiving water, each with its own regulatory history:
- The Willamette River: Subject to a decades-long TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) cleanup program following historic industrial pollution.
- The Columbia River: A major regional receiving water shared with Washington State.
