Puerto Rico Water Treatment Operator Certification
Puerto Rico's drinking water operator certification is governed by Act No. 53 of July 13, 1978, as amended, administered by the Drinking Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators Examining Board (Junta Examinadora de Operadores de Plantas de Tratamiento de Agua Potable y de Aguas Usadas), under the PR Department of State. Operators are certified across four grades — Operator I through Operator IV — renewing every 3 years.
Distribution Is Not a Separate Credential
Unlike most mainland states, Puerto Rico does not license Distribution separately. The distribution system — pipes, tanks, and pumps carrying treated water to consumers — is considered part of the potable water treatment system and falls under the same Water Treatment operator license.
