Residuals & Solids Handling: Process Control Basics

A process-control level guide to gravity thickeners, storage lagoons, filter backwash recycle decisions and the Filter Backwash Recycling Rule concept, routine solids monitoring, and common troubleshooting for a Class C operator.

A gravity thickener that's overloaded looks, at first glance, exactly like one that's working fine — the difference only shows up when you check the numbers. As a Class C operator you're expected to move past simply knowing residuals exist and start actively running the equipment that concentrates them: reading a thickener's performance, deciding whether backwash water is safe to recycle, and catching problems before they become compliance issues. This guide covers the process-control fundamentals behind that responsibility.
Gravity Thickening: How It Works and What to Watch
A gravity thickener is essentially a specialized settling tank. Dilute sludge — often 1-2% solids straight out of a sedimentation basin — flows in, and solids are given quiet time to settle under gravity. Two things leave the tank:
  • Thickened sludge, withdrawn from the bottom of the tank, now concentrated
