South Carolina Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification
South Carolina uniquely licenses wastewater treatment operators along two separate tracks, each running Class D (entry) through Class A (highest):
- Biological: covers conventional and activated-sludge municipal treatment plants, the track most operators at typical municipal utilities will pursue.
- Physical/Chemical: covers industrial or specialized treatment processes, reflecting the state's significant industrial dischargers in textiles, chemicals, and manufacturing.
Operators should be certified on the track matching their facility's treatment process — a biological (activated sludge) municipal plant operator needs the Biological track, while an operator at an industrial physical/chemical treatment facility needs the Physical/Chemical track.
