Virginia Water Treatment Operator Certification
Virginia's waterworks operator certification is administered by the Virginia Board for Waterworks & Wastewater Works Operators, under the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). Certificates require continuing professional education (CPE) for renewal.
A Reversed Class Ladder — Read Carefully
Virginia uses a Class 1-6 ladder where Class 1 is the HIGHEST level of certification — the reverse of most states' A-D or I-IV conventions, where higher letters or numbers usually mean more advanced. Classes 5-6 are lower-complexity, entry-level credentials with reduced exam fees. Operators moving to Virginia from another state (or vice versa) should not assume the numbering works the same way.
